Faz alguns dias nós conversamos um pouco sobre os countable and uncountable nouns, ou substantivos contáveis e não-contáveis.
Mas uma dúvida que costuma surgir com frequência quando falamos desse tema é como usar aquelas palavras que sempre aparecem com o substantivo e que expressam quantidade. Sim, estou falando de much, many, little, few, a lot, etc.

Os dois são usados para expressar uma grande quantidade, mas cuidado com a diferença: much sempre será usado com os uncountable nouns (substantivos não-contáveis), enquanto many será usado com os countable nouns. Quer uma dica para não esquecer mais? Lembre-se que much tem o mesmo “U” de uncountable.
– How much coffee would you like?
– We don’t have much information to proceed.
– I’m trying to avoid eating much sugar.
– How much is this coat? (Neste caso, embora não tenha um substantivo na frase, fica subentendido que estamos falando de dinheiro)
– There are many satisfied employees in this company.
– They won’t ask you many questions.
– We don’t need many bottles of water.
Agora estamos falando de pouca quantidade, mas, neste caso, lembre-se que little será usado com os uncountable nouns e few com countable nouns. Também podemos usar as expressões “a little” e “a few”, e será igual no português, ou seja, “um pouco”.
– I like little sugar in my coffee.
– We got a little help to do this.
– She carries little luggage when she travels.
– Just a few clients have requested assistance.
– I bought a few chocolate bars for us.
– Few people are interested in this book.
Boa notícia: na dúvida, use a expressão “a lot” para expressar uma grande quantidade, pois ela pode ser usada para substituir tanto many quanto much. Lembre-se apenas de usar a preposição “of” se houver um substantivo depois.
– We don’t have a lot of questions.
– Lots of people are taking online courses.
– I don’t drink a lot of coffee in the morning.
– He doesn’t have a lot of money left.
