Palavras semelhantes entre si, na pronúncia ou na ortografia (às vezes nos dois…) , sempre causam confusão. Hoje escolhemos seis pares de palavras, para você observar as diferenças. Depois de ver a transcrição fonética, a descrição em inglês e algum exemplo, tem uma atividade: tente dar o correspondente em inglês para as palavras em português, usando as doze palavras aprendidas.
Você vai ver a transcrição fonética ao lado de cada palavra, como hearty /ˈhɑːr.t̬i/ ou hardy /ˈhɑːr.di/. Os símbolos fonéticos estão definidos no Alfabeto Fonético Internacional (IPA-The International Phonetic Alphabet). O apóstrofo vem sempre antes da sílaba tônica, ou da “sílaba mais forte”. Por exemplo: casa – [‘kazɐ] / babá [bɐ‘ba].

strong, bold, or capable of prevailing through tough conditions.
Ex: The hardy plant can handle some frost
compliment /ˈkɑːm.plə.mənt/
an expression of praise, approval, admiration or respect
Ex: my compliments to the chef for such a wonderful meal

complement /ˈkɑːm.plə.ment/
an enhancement, to make something ele seem better or more attractive.
Ex: The drums were a perfect complement to their dancing style
bowl /boʊl/
a round, deep dish used for food or liquid.
Ex: Where is the soup bowl?

bowel /ˈbaʊ.əl/
the part of the alimentary canal below the stomach; the intestine, the long tube that carries solid waste from the stomach out of the body
peak /piːk/
the most extreme possible amount or value; the highest, strongest or best point.
Ex: the mountain peak

peek /piːk/
a secret look, especially for a short time or while trying to avoid being seen.
Ex: I only peeked, I did not see anything interesting
dessert /dɪˈzɝːt/
it is typically the final course of a meal. It is usually sweet.

arid land with little or no vegetation, often covered with sand or rocks, where there is very little rain.
wave /weɪv/
to raise your hand and move it from side to side as a way of greeting someone, or telling someone to move in a particular direction; a raised line of water that moves across the surface of an area of water, especially the sea

to give up your right to to something; to not demand something you have a right to, or not cause a rule to be obeyed. The bank manager waived the charge (= said we did not have to pay)
